PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a seam ravel preventing device which achieves to prevent the raveling at the end of sewing without requiring a large space to arrange a looper thread hanging hook in the end part of a bed of a sewing machine, and a ravel preventing method. SOLUTION: The looper thread hanging hook 4 to catch a looper thread in the neighborhood of an advancing end of a looper 1 when the looper advances to the left front is arranged on the right rear side of a needle drop position, and a thread cutting hook 3 which advances and retreats in the same direction as the looper 1 is arranged on the right side of the needle drop position. At the end of sewing, the hook 4 is forced to advance and retreat with the looper 1 remaining in an advance state, catches the looper thread 7 running to the rear side of the looper 1, and holds the looper thread 7 on the rear side of the needle drop position. After performing sewing for one stitch in this state, the thread cutting hook 3 is forced to advance and retreat to catch the looper thread 7 running to the rear side of the looper 1 with a first hook part 31 at the end and catches needle threads 6a, 6b and the looper thread 7 held by the looper thread hanging hook 4 with a second hook part 32 in the middle.
