<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of accurately detecting manuscript size, using a simple structure and at a low cost. <P>SOLUTION: A manuscript reader 3 of this image forming device reads an image of a manuscript by using a fixing platen 110 as background, when the manuscript is automatically sent by an ADF 100. The fixing platen 110 is coated with a luminous substance, and light from a light source 131 of an exposure scanning unit 13 is received by a portion not blocked by the manuscript to emit afterglow. This afterglow is read by the exposure scanning unit 13, thereby detecting the manuscript size. Furthermore, when the manuscript is placed on a manuscript placing stand by a user, the manuscript reader 3 reads the image of the manuscript, by using a manuscript cover 11 as background. Similarly, the manuscript cover 11 is coated with the luminous substance, receives the light outside the device, and emits afterglow.
