<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operation unit for a game machine and a portable game machine in which an operation means is easily operated even when those are made small. <P>SOLUTION: The portable game machine 10 is provided with a horizontally long rectangular housing 12, and the cover 14 is mounted over the almost entire surface of the housing. Since the planar shape of the upper main surface of both housing and cover is a "bobbin shape", a lower side slope 26 for connecting the lower side face 22 of the housing and the upper main surface is formed. On the left and right ends of the upper side face 20 of the housing, a left switch 32L and a right switch 32R are provided as first operation means.
