PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recorder which has an image quality confirmation function preliminarily confirming the image quality of a reproduced image in the case of recording an image in a set recording mode before recording and suppresses an increase in power consumption by the execution of the image quality confirmation function, and a driving method of the image recorder. SOLUTION: A data processing part 2 for image quality confirmation is provided with an encoding/decoding part 16 for performing a portion of encoding processing performed by an encoder 5 and decoding processing, and a memory 15. When an image quality confirmation start operation key of a user interface 3 is operated, the data processing part 2 for image quality confirmation is controlled in a driven state. A read/display control part 7 reads an image for confirmation stored in the memory 15 and displays the confirmation image on a display part 8 during executing an image quality confirmation mode. An encoding parameter used by the encoder 5 and the data processing part 2 for image quality confirmation is changed in accordance with the operation of an image quality adjustment button of the user interface 3 to change a data compression rate in the encoder 5 and the data processing part 2 for image quality confirmation.
