PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve gear for an internal combustion engine capable of securing engine output even when abnormality that an advancing amount of a plunger is excessively small occurs. SOLUTION: This device is applied to the internal combustion engine equipped with a valve train 60 having a lash adjuster 80, and a lift amount variable mechanism 46 drive-controlled based on the engine operation state and varying a lift amount of an intake valve 30. The lash adjuster 80 adjusts a valve clearance of the intake valve 30 through advancing of the plunger 92 from a body 82. When the abnormality that the advancing amount of the plunger 92 is smaller than a lower limit value of an operation range in the normal operation time occurs, the lift amount variable mechanism 46 is drive-controlled in a mode different from the normal operation time of the plunger 92, and the lift amount of the intake valve 30 is forcibly increased.
