PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a muffler for an internal combustion engine equipped with an opening and closing valve capable of being arranged in a narrow space. SOLUTION: In this muffler for the internal combustion engine, an inside of an outer shell 11 is partitioned into a plurality of chambers 10, 12 and 14 by a plurality of separators 6 and 8, and the muffler for the internal combustion engine is provided with an inlet pipe 16 to which exhaust gas delivered from the internal combustion engine is introduced, and an outlet pipe 18 for delivering the exhaust gas. The muffler for the internal combustion engine is further provided with the opening and closing valve 24 having a valve element 36 supported in such a manner of capable of being oscillated around a support shaft 30, and an exhaust passage extending from the inlet pipe 16 to the outlet pipe 18 is switched by opening and closing of the opening and closing valve 24. Side holes 26 and 28 are formed on the pipes 16 and 18, the pipes 16 and 18 are arranged in parallel, the support shaft 30 is arranged between the pipes 16 and 18 in parallel, and the opening and closing valve 24 can open and close both of the side holes 26 and 28 by oscillation of the valve element 36. The opening and closing valve 24 is arranged between the separators 6 and 8, and both ends of the support shaft 30 are supported by the separators 6 and 8. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
