<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetostrictive element actuator which is capable of widening the linear range of an AC displacement output to an AC magnetic field input. <P>SOLUTION: The magnetostrictive element 20 is composed of magnetostrictive movable element unit 50 which consists of magnetostrictive elements that are each equipped with bias magnetic field magnets located at both its ends and arranged in an axial direction, and whose expansion is the total sum of the expansions of all the magnetoresistive elements; an element cover 60 which guides the magnetostrictive movable element unit 50; a drive coil 40 arranged around the magnetostrictive movable element unit 50; a vibration receiving plate 72 and a movable rod 74 which are arranged at the tip of the magnetostrictive movable element units 50; and a case which houses them all. The case is composed of a cylindrical case 30, a bottom plate 32 which bears up the terminal end of the magnetostrictive movable element unit 50 with its bottom plane, and a lid 34 which contains coil springs 76 that energize the magnetostrictive movable element unit 50 toward its bottom side through intermediary of the vibration receiving plate 72.
