PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface light source device which does not have deterioration of uniformity of luminance while achieving reduction in the number of process, labor of process, and manufacturing cost. SOLUTION: The surface light source device is composed of two sheets of substrates 110, 120, 210, 220 arranged at the upper part and the lower part, respectively; barrier ribs 130, 230 to form a plurality of discharge spaces 160, 260 for injecting a discharge gas; first jointing parts 140, 240 which are partially formed in the barrier ribs and joint the barrier ribs to the substrate partially; second jointing parts 150, 250 which are formed as a whole along the edge between the two sheets of substrates and joint the edge of the substrates wholly; and electrodes 170, 270 for applying voltage on the discharge gas.
