PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a photographic optical system of a telescope type in which satisfactory correction of color aberrations is ensured and the entire lens length is short, and to provide an imaging apparatus that has the photographic optical system. SOLUTION: The photographic optical system has, in the order starting from the object side to the image side, a front-lens group having positive refractive power and a second lens group having negative refractive power. In the photographic optical system, the front lens group includes, in this order starting from the object side to the image side, an eleventh lens group with positive refractive power, composed of a single lens; a twelfth lens group with positive refractive power which includes a diffracting optical part; and a thirteenth lens group with negative refractive power. The diffracting optical part is convex on the object side.
