PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus having a color ring switching mechanism that allows the use of a color ring using a white filter, due to excessive white color component of an actual image and a color ring having no white filter, by switching between them, and to provide a color wheel control method. SOLUTION: Each of input image signals is converted into a digital signal, processed through an image processing section 64, and generates a DMD drive signal by a DMD signal generating section 65. The signal thus generated is inputted to a DMD display section 20; whereas each signal converted into a digital signal by an A/D converter is further converted to a color difference signal, by being inputted to a matrix converting section 66. The color difference signal is compared with a threshold, in the comparison circuit of a white color determining section 67. When the level of the color difference signal is small, it is determined that the signal is a white part. According to the result of the determination made by a color ring switching determining section 68 that white color area is excessive, information about the movement of a multi-character color wheel 41 and an instruction are given to a DMD signal generating section 65 and a color ring switching section 46.
