PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus designed such that toner sticking to a cleaning blade is prevented from scattering when the cleaning blade is separated from the image carrier. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 1 includes: the image carrier 8 on which an image is formed with toner; the cleaning blade 18, the leading end of which is brought into contact with the image carrier 8 and separated therefrom; and a sealing member 22 disposed upstream of the cleaning blade 18 in the direction of the movement of the image carrier 8 when the cleaning blade 18 is in contact with the image carrier 8, and used to isolate the cleaning blade 18 from a space on the upstream side of the image carrier 8. In the image forming apparatus, the sealing member 22 is moved to an area between the leading end of the cleaning blade 18 and the image carrier 8 when the cleaning blade 18 is separated from the image carrier 8.
