PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of forming soil-free images by preventing foreign matter from biting, by cleaning means and by completely removing toner and foreign matters on image carriers. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes the image carriers 1 and 25, on which toner T images are formed to be transferred to a transfer medium P, and the cleaning means 7 and 35 disposed in firm contact with image carriers 1 and 25, respectively, for removing residual toner T on the image carriers 1 and 25. After a reference amount of transfer operation on the transfer medium P, each of cleaning means 7, 35 is separated from the image carrier 1 and is brought into firm contact with the image carrier 1 until the start of the next transfer operation.
