Simultaneously with a start (time ts1) of liquid crystal data rewrite, switching control of one of the linear light emitting areas constituting the light emitting region of the illumination device is started and the luminance of the linear light emitting area is gradually increased. A light source control unit performs control so that the luminance reaches a set luminance after the completion of the liquid crystal response (time t1) and before the lighting switching time (time t2) of the linear light emitting areas. With this control, current is not supplied suddenly to the organic EL element upon lighting switching, which increases the service life. Accordingly, even when the light emitting region of the illumination device is formed by the organic EL elements, the service life of the organic EL elements can be prolonged.
