The production of water-tight durable concrete layers, e.g. for horizontal bases as well as for walls and ceilings, has silicon dioxide added to a concrete mixture, 0.2-3% dry weight, followed by an outer coating of an alkaline silicate onto the dried concrete. The silicon dioxide is added as a fine powder, or as a suspension resulting in less pores and less microcracks. The alkaline silicate is added after a maximum of 20 days drying and can be applied as an aqueous or alcohol solution.
