HEAD-UP DISPLAY

Methods and apparatus are provided for a combined image on a head-up display (10). A data image display (32) provides a first part of a combined image. An optical input provides a second part of the combined image, e.g., the background scene. A combiner (16) superimposes the first and second parts to provide the combined image to the viewer (20). The data image display (32) preferentially delivers s-polarized light to the combiner (16), which as a selective reflectance region for preferentially reflecting s-polarized light in a wavelength region of interest. In a preferred embodiment, the data image display (32) comprises a backlight (50), a liquid crystal layer (54-1) and two polarizers (52-1, 58-1) oriented so that the data images directed toward the combiner (16) are s-polarized with respect to the selective reflectance region. A polarization rotation element may also be used in the data image display (32) to facilitate s-polarization orientation.
