A method of preparing fuel pellets includes the steps of providing a feed stock comprising corn fibres or bran having a moisture content of bout 10% t o 16%, and compressing and extruding the feedstock through a die to obtain f uel pellets in the form of small cylinders having a iameter of about 3/8 inc h (0 9525 cm) to about 3/4 inch (1 905 cm), said pellets have an ash content of about 1% and a colorific value of bout 8,000 BTU's (8434 kilojoules) per pound of fuel on a dry basis The method may include a step of pre-treatmg t he feedstock with igh temperature steam before being framed into pellets at a sufficient temperature and sufficient time to activate hemicellulose withm the ibre as a binding agent The method may include a step of mixing the fee dstock with a sequestering agent before being formed into pellets or sequest ering alkali metal vapours and raising the fusion point of the inorganic ele ments during combustion of the pellets The sequestering agent may be calcium carbonate added in amounts up to about 0 5% by weight
