One of the races of a ball or roller bearing is supported by a flexible diaphragm 9 which forms a wall of a chamber 16. The chamber 16 is supplied with pressurized fluid by a pipe 22 and passages 20, 21 in a housing 1, so that the diaphragm is deformed and an axial load is applied to the bearing to take up play. In an embodiment, the outer race 5 is mounted in a sleeve 6 having a shoulder formed thereon by an inwardly-directed flange 7. The inner edge of the diaphragm is clamped between an outwardly directed flange 8 of the sleeve 6 and a ring 10 and the outer edge of the diaphragm is clamped between rings 12, 14 which are mounted in a counter-bore of the housing 1. A sealing- ring 19 is mounted between a shoulder 17 of the bores and a tapered surface 18 of the ring 10, and a cover 15 is provided. The bearing arrangement is suitable for a high-speed grinding wheel. |
