A method for measuring speed in a portable terminal is provided to measure the speed of a mobile object in a camera preview mode of the portable terminal and to display the measured speed, thereby conveniently measuring and displaying the speed of the mobile object by using the portable terminal without additional equipment. A method for measuring speed in a portable terminal comprises the following steps of: converting a mode into a preview mode for measuring the speed when a speed measuring function is selected in a camera preview mode of the portable terminal(201~203); measuring a distance of a mobile object in the preview mode for measuring the speed(209); measuring time of the mobile object in the preview mode for measuring the speed(210); and measuring the speed of the mobile object through the measured distance and time of the object and displaying the measured speed(211).
