767,677. Hydraulic brakes. WAGNER ELECTRIC CORPORATION. July 29, 1953 [Aug. 9, 1952], No. 21020/53. Class 103 (1). An hydraulic brake system for application to industrial plant comprises a servo-unit 14 having a servo-piston 160, subject to the delivery pressure from a continuously running pump 134, the piston 160 applying thrust through rod 162 to the piston 182 of a master cylinder 180 from which pressure is applied to the brake cylinder 16. Normal control is by means of an actuator device 12, having a shaft 66, which when pad 70 is depressed, seals off port 90 in a piston 92 compressing liquid underneath. The device 12 therefore acts as a master cylinder which applies pressure through conduit 28 to one face of a by-pass piston 148 in the servo unit 14. The delivery from the pump 134 passes through connection 132 to the space in cylinder 124 on one side of the servo-piston 160 and the movement of the by-pass piston 148 to the right throttles the return of fluid to the suction side of the pump so that a pressure is produced to move piston 160 to the right and thrust is also applied to the master cylinder piston 182. The cylinder 180 which normally has its right-hand end out of contact with a gasket 192 is moved to the right by the friction between the piston 182 and the cylinder barrel so that communication with the surrounding space is sealed off, pressure fluid then being supplied through the end connection to the brake cylinder 16. Connected to the brake cylinder 16 is a unit 20 which acts both as a reservoir and as a device for bleeding air from the system. In the event of malfunction of the servo-unit 14 the brake can be applied by a conventional master cylinder unit 18 delivering pressure fluid by way of a two-way shuttle valve 30.
