Provided is a braking device for elevator traction machine which has a construction that makes the braking device removable from a traction machine main body and makes a mounting portion of the braking device rotatable in increments of 90 degrees with respect to a rotary shaft, whereby an installation position of the traction machine can be set in such a manner as to facilitate the adjustment of the brake. A mounting portion of a braking device(4) for elevator traction machine which is attached to a rotary shaft (3) of an elevator traction machine (2) is attached rotatably in increments of 90 degrees with respect to the rotary shaft (3) of the traction machine (2) so that an installation position of the braking device (4) can be changed in increments of 90 degrees. The braking device (4) has a brake mechanism the characteristics of which change due to gravity.
