In a plain journal or bearing, the surface is hardened by a pattern of hardened lines spaced at intervals inversely proportioned to the loads which the various areas of the surface bear in operation. The hardness lines may be produced by a high-frequency element or a flame hardening process, and the lines may be straight, curved, parallel or intersecting. The invention is particularly applicable to the bearing surfaces of a crank-shaft. |
