A display system, a controlling method thereof, and a video signal outputting device are provided to normally display only the video signal output from the authenticated video signal outputting device and enable a user to update a comparison/authentication key by making a display device authenticate the comparison/authentication key stored in the video signal outputting device. The video signal outputting device(10) includes a user input part(19), a comparison/authentication key storing part(17) storing the comparison/authentication key, and a video signal controller(15) updating the comparison/authentication key based on an update signal if an update signal of the comparison/authentication key is inputted through the user input part. The display device(30) includes a display unit(33), a display interface(31) receiving the video signal from the video signal outputting device, and a display controller(35). The controller controls a display state of an image displayed to the display unit depending on matching between the comparison/authentication key received from the video signal outputting device and a reference comparison/authentication key.
