Provided is a method for preparing a graft copolymer that has an improved graft ratio and is superior in gloss and thermal stability while maintaining mechanical properties and appearance properties. The method for preparing a graft copolymer comprises the steps of: (a) charging mixed monomers, an emulsifier, a molecular weight regulator, and de-ionized water into a reactor, followed by thereto adding a peroxycarbonate-based redox initiator and an activator to initiate a reaction, wherein the mixed monomers consist of a rubber latex having an average particle size of 0.26-0.34micron and a gel content of 65-95wt%, an aromatic vinyl compound, and a vinyl cyano compound; (b) performing a reaction by continuously adding mixed monomers, a peroxycarbonate-based redox initiator, an emulsifier, and ion-exchanged water to the reactant when or after the reaction of the step (a) is initiated, wherein the mixed monomers consist of an aromatic vinyl compound and a vinyl cyano compound; and (c) adding a peroxycarbonate-based redox initiator and an activator to the reactant of the step (b).
