An apparatus for maintaining a railway by equipping with an apparatus for recognizing the location of a railway spike is provided to prevent the damage of facilities by recognizing the location of facilities on a railroad exactly and automatically and to reduce the manpower required for maintenance remarkably. An apparatus for maintaining a railway comprises: maintenance equipment containing compacting equipment, a display device to present the data transferred form a railway spike location recognition device to a worker and a repair equipment controller to control the compacting equipment using the data; a railway spike location recognition device containing a spike recognition unit(210) checking if a spike exists in a railway or not, outputting signals accordingly and having a distance recognition unit(211) recognizing the distance to the bottom, and a signal output unit(212) outputting signals to let an user know the existence of a spike if the distance recognized from the distance recognition unit is below the preset value, a location measurement unit(240) outputting location data, a storage unit(230) storing the inputted data, and a control unit(220) receiving the outputted signals from the spike recognition unit and the location data outputted from the location measurement unit, and then transferring to the storage unit; and an impurities removal device composed of a compressed air supply unit supplying compressed air, and a nozzle spraying the compressed air supplied from the compressed air supply unit toward a railroad track.
