The gearbox (1), having coaxial input and output members, two epicycloid gear trains (4, 5) and a system of clutches (23, 24, 25, 28) and brakes (26, 27) that provide the different gear ratios, includes a step-up epicycloid gear train (6) to provide at least one supplementary gear. Each of the clutches operates between a component of a gear train and an earth, input, output or other component. Each epicycloid train has a sun gear (10, 14) and satellite gears (12, 16) on a carrier (11, 15), with the step-up gear having several staged satellite gears (21, 22), its carrier (20) connected to earth by a clutch, and sun gears (18, 19) connected permanently to the output gear train and gearbox input.
