PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact, lightweight and bright image display apparatus which uses a non-telecentric optical system, or a reflection-type LCD and a eccentric optical system to have high optical performance. SOLUTION: The image display apparatus comprises an image display device, and an ocular optical system which leads an image formed by the image display device to an eye point of an observer without forming an intermediate image so that the image can be observed as a virtual image. The ocular optical system comprises a eccentric optical system 10 having at least one eccentric back-coated reflecting surface, and the eccentric optical system 10 is constituted as the non-telecentric optical system. The image display device is a reflection-type image display device 8 which displays an image by reflection of illumination light, and the image display device 8 is equipped with a scanning member 25 performing one-dimensional scanning or two-dimensional scanning, and an illumination means 24 formed so that a two-dimensional image can be formed by the scanning of the scanning member.
