A catalyst (1) comprising a catalytic material (3) supported on a support (2), characterised in that the support (2) comprises particles predominantly having a maximum particle size of less than 1000 nm and an aspect ratio of greater than 2, and the. catalytic material (3) is mainly present in the form of discrete islands of catalytic material (3) supported on the support (2), with a substantial proportion of the islands of catalytic material (3) being separate and isolated from other islands of catalytic material (3). The islands of catalytic material (3) are separate and isolated from other islands of catalytic material (3) such that diffusion and growth of the islands of catalytic material (3) at elevated temperature is minimised or avoided.
