An aromatic polymer which comprises a recurring unit represented by the general formula (I), wherein (A1) an acetylated polymer being obtained by acetylating the hydroxyl group thereof has a number average polymerization degree of 3 or more, and (A2) in a circular dichroism spectrum in the wavelength range of 200 to 350 nm of the above acetylated polymer, the maximum value of the absolute value of a molar ellipticity (degree cm<SUP>-2</SUP>?dmol<SUP>-1</SUP>) per mole of the repeating unit of the acetylated polymer is 50,000 or more. (I) (wherein R is a hydrocarbon group being optionally substituted, a hydrocarbon-oxy group being optionally substituted, a hydrocarbon-mercupto group being optionally substituted or a hydrocarbon-amino group being optionally substituted, and two R's may form a ring, with the proviso that the unit contains two bonding hands and has no plane of symmetry perpendicular to the benzene ring).
