The pedestrian protection device for a motor vehicle includes an absorber (18), with an integrated sensor (20), which is connected directly to an outer wall (16) of the vehicle's front section. A defined gap (22) is defined between the absorber and a flexurally rigid support section (10) of the vehicle's front section. The outer wall is a bumper outer skin and the flexurally rigid support component is a bumper cross member. The flexurally rigid component is fixed to the frame of the vehicle by damping elements (12) which deform only during a heavy impact.
