An image signal processing circuit, a display device, and an image signal processing method are provided to improve gradation performance of the display device carrying out reverse gamma conversion without decreasing resolution of images. An image processing circuit(3) includes a converter circuit for converting an input image signal, and a display device(4) for displaying an image. The image processing circuit includes a smoothing signal generator(5), a detector(6), and a substitution unit(7). The smoothing signal generator receives the converted image signal and smooths the image signal along at least one direction of the image signal. The detector detects a pattern from an image. For the pattern, a first gradation value corresponds to a gradation value of a plurality of pixels selected from a plurality of pixels constructing the display device and arranged in the smoothing direction, a second gradation value corresponds to a gradation value of a plurality of pixels adjacent to the plurality of pixels arranged in the smoothing direction, an absolute value of the difference between a first preliminary conversion gradation value corresponding to the first gradation value in a preliminary conversion image signal and a second preliminary conversion gradation value corresponding to a second gradation value is 1, and the absolute value of the difference between the first and second gradation values is greater than 2. The substitution unit substitutes a smoothed gradation value for the gradation value of at least one pixel selected from pixels constructing the pattern and outputs the substitution result to the display device.
