A display device displays one pixel by a plurality of rectangular display elements. The display device includes: multi-gradation character generation sections (4a, 4b) for generating information on a multi-gradation character image whose periphery is gradated; and an element display control section (6) for controlling the display state of a display section (2) so as to display a multi-gradation character image by correlating respective rectangular display elements (10) constituting the display section (2), to one or more pixels according to the information on the multi-gradation character image. Thus, it is possible to reduce the quantization error and display a character accurately viewed when a character of a high accuracy is displayed.
