A surface light source having surface segmentation driving control function is provided to independently control a discharge region defined by a first and a second groove which are formed on a front and a rear surface of a substrate, respectively. A surface light source includes plural first grooves(142) arranged in a matrix form on a front surface of a first substrate, and plural second grooves(144) arranged in a matrix form on a rear surface of the first substrate not to overlap over the first grooves. Either of first and second electrodes having different electric characteristic is selectively positioned on the second groove. A discharge region defined by the first and the second electrode is independently controlled.
