A surface light source and a backlight unit having the same are provided to prevent the generation of gap between a barrier and a substrate, thereby suppressing the drift of current between discharge spaces, by using a bonding layer to bond between the barrier and the substrate. A first substrate and a second substrate are disposed to face each other. Barriers are arranged between the first substrate and the second substrate to define a plurality of discharge spaces, into which discharge gas is injected. A bonding layer(170) bonds the barriers to the first and second substrates. A voltage is applied into the discharge gas through electrodes. The bonding layer includes a first layer(172) formed on the entire surfaces of the outermost barriers, and a second layer(174) partially formed on the remaining central barriers except the outermost barriers.
