A gaseous effluent arising from e.g. a chemical process bears a particulate aerosol load that is surrendered to an electrostatic particle separator enclosed by a sheath. Gas enters the separator via a jet that is followed by a high-voltage electrode. The sheath is gas-permeable for the gas concerned and is a grid, a perforated sheet metal tube, or a cylindrical array of metal rods separated by regular intervals, each end held by a ring.
