A fabric (1) is held by corner guides (4, 5) so that it protrudes from the work table (6). The protruding sides (7, 8) are then folded by the upward motion of folding guides (16) while a corner blade through a gap (15) assists in forming a pleat with the excess corner fabric. The blade is withdrawn and a sewing and cutting device (14) is raised to make the corner seam and then cut off unwanted fabric. An independent claim is included for the corresponding equipment, with controlled actuators to carry out the guide and sewing motions. To produce the complete hood, the equipment can be duplicated in the four corners of the work table (6) or the table can be rotated to produce the corners successively.
