PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that has a simple configuration and can be easily controlled, prevents energy waste, obtains uniform temperature distribution, attains efficient stable fixing, and ensures high quality image formation. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a fixing device having a heated element with a heat-generating body, a heat-resistant film slid in contact with the heated element, and a pressure member which is brought into pressure-contact with the heated element via the heat-resistant film and forming a nip part; and a control means for causing the heat-generating body to generate heat and controlling a fixing operation in which an unfixed toner image transferred onto the recording material is fixed at the nip area. In the image forming apparatus, the heat-generating body has, on the same face of the heated element, a plurality of heating areas whose widths are different in a direction orthogonal to the conveyance direction of recording material.
