The method involves providing a start period for igniting a gas discharge lamp. A dimming period that has a duty voltage set initially in a previous OFF period of the lamp is provided after the start period. The lamp is provided with electric energy to maintain it in a start condition, where the duty voltage in the dimming period lasts a length equal to the dimming period corresponding to the different dimming values.
