The display element has touch pins (3,4,8) that can be raised above a surface (6) by actuators and individually controlled by control logic. The pins are arranged adjacent to each other in a row (2) and can be controlled as a row by control logic, whereby the control logic is designed so that all pins are raised fore a first end value to be displayed, no pins are raised for a second end value to be displayed and only a suitable number of pins is raised for intermediate values.
