It is intended to, while minimizing any damage on cells during long-term culture, enable judging of whether cells during culture are dead or alive with high precision without the need of introducing of special gene or special dye. Noting that cells having undergone cell death without suffering physical impairment during culture become approximately circular in configuration, directly stop movements and maintain the approximately circular configuration, whether cells are dead or alive is judged (steps S736 and S737) by comparing with a threshold value the degree of circularity as a cell parameter indicating the characteristic of cell region (Rt,m) having been photographed and measured at multiple points of time (steps S732 to S735). As a result, while minimizing any damage on cells during long-term culture, whether cells during culture are dead or alive can be judged with high precision without the need of introducing of special gene or special dye. |
