A surface light source having surface segmentation driving control function is provided to independently control a discharge region defined by each groove and at least one pair of electrodes corresponding to the groove. A surface light source includes plural grooves(132) arranged in a matrix form on a front surface of a first substrate, and at least one pair of electrodes consisting of first and second electrodes(104,108). The first and the second electrode having different electric characteristic are positioned in a region corresponding to the grooves. A discharge region defined by each groove and the pair of electrodes corresponding to the groove is independently controlled.
