A spindle operated clamp comprises a fixed slide (12) with a fixed grip (14) at the free end and with a sliding grip (16) driven by a spindle (18) via a universal joint (24) comprising two joint orthogonal axes. The handle can be permanently fitted, or can be unclipped. The grip has a range up to 20 to 45 mm. Alternately the drive can be via a knurled nut.
