PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for industrially advantageously producing anα-methylene-β-alkyl-γ-butyrolactone by using an inexpensive starting raw material and a general purpose reactor. SOLUTION: The method for producing the compound represented by formula (I) comprises reacting a compound represented by formula (II) with a formaldehyde precursor and a compound represented by formula (III) or a carbonate of an alkali metal. (In the formula (II), R<SB>1</SB>and R<SB>2</SB>are each independently is a linear or branched 1-10C alkyl group; and in the formula (III) R<SB>3</SB>and R<SB>4</SB>are each independently a linear or branched 1-13C alkyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an aryl group, an aralkyl group or an alkylaryl group, or a saturated or partially or wholly unsaturated 5- or 6-membered group containing zero to two hetero atoms).
