PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technology capable of reading an original with high efficiency and reduced power consumption. SOLUTION: An image reading apparatus for reading an original while dividing the original into a plurality of blocks in a main scanning includes an image processing circuit for independently carrying out image processing in parallel as to each of the divided blocks and controls whether or not each divided block is to be operated according to a main scanning width of the original.
