Methods and apparatus for measuring density of a fluid. The apparatus (24) includes a shaft (26) adapted to be positioned within a fluid and a biased float (30) disposed on the shaft (26) and capable of movement along the shaft (26). The apparatus (24) further includes a displacement sensor (32) for detecting a position of the float (30) along the shaft (26). A method of sensing the density includes positioning the biased float (30) in the fluid and sensing the position of the float (30) to obtain data representative of the density of the fluid.
