PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a cryoprotectant enabling the cryoprotection treatment of a protein crystal to be carried out easily, and enabling a good crystallization condition to be screened rapidly from many crystallization conditions; and further to obtain such the cryoprotectant containing a reagent for exchanging an atom with a heavy atom to simultaneously exchange the atom of the protein with the heavy atom. SOLUTION: The oily cryoprotectant for crystallization of the protein comprises paratone-N, a paraffin oil and glycerol. The aqueous cryoprotectant for crystallizing the protein comprises a hyaluronic acid, glycerol and an aqueous medium. The oily and aqueous cryoprotectants comprising the reagent for exchanging the atom with the heavy atom are also provided. The kit for cryoprotection (and that for the exchange with the heavy atom) of the protein crystal comprises the oily and aqueous cryoprotectants. The method of the cryoprotection (and the exchange with the heavy atom) of the protein crystal comprises using proper each or a combination of the oily and aqueous cryoprotectants.
