A start controller of an internal combustion engine capable of increasing the starting capability of the internal combustion engine. The start controller comprises an ECU which corrects the expected stopping position of a crankshaft based on the stopping position of the crankshaft or the rotating state of the crankshaft immediately before the stop of the crankshaft, switches the operating period of a fuel injection valve of a stopped suction stroke cylinder predicted to be between the stopping position of the crankshaft and the suction stroke of the crankshaft based on the predicted stopping position of the crankshaft, switches, upon the start of the engine, an ignition timing for operating a spark plug based on the stopping position of the crankshaft, predicts, during a prescribed period of time after an engine start, the amount of suction air sucked into the cylinder based on the engine speed, the stopping position of the crankshaft, the capacity of the intake passage, and the number of performed suction strokes, and calculates a fuel injection amount in regard to the cylinder from the predicted air amount.
