A salt additive formed by reaction of a carboxylic acid and a hydrocarbyl derivative of pyridine, which improves low temperature stability as compared with conventional additives and improves lubricity of low sulfur fuel oils comprising the salt additive, is provided. A salt is formed by reaction of a carboxylic acid and a hydrocarbyl derivative of pyridine. The hydrocarbyl derivative of pyridine is represented by a formula, wherein n is an integer from 1 to 5, and R each independently represents a hydrocarbyl group with 1 to 30 carbon atoms. The n is 2 or more. At least one group R represents an alkyl or alkenyl group. The carboxylic acid comprises a fatty acid or a mixture of fatty acids. The carboxylic acid comprises tall oil fatty acid(TOFA). An additive composition comprises a salt formed by reaction of a carboxylic acid and a hydrocarbyl derivative of pyridine. A fuel oil composition comprises a salt formed by reaction of a carboxylic acid and a hydrocarbyl derivative of pyridine, or the additive composition comprising the salt. |
