A liquid crystal display device having at least two optically anisotropic body sheets (A, B) and a liquid crystal cell between a pair of polarizers disposed in a positional relationship that their absorption axes are generally perpendicular to each other. When the refractive indices along the slow axes in the plane of the sheets (A, B) measured by a light of a wavelength of 550 nm are denoted by nxA and nxB, the refractive indices in the direction perpendicular to the slow axes in the plane are denoted by n yA and nyB, and the refractive indices in the direction of the thickness are denoted by nzA and nzB, nzA > nyA and nzB> nyB. The sheets (A, B) are in a positional relationship that the slow axes in the plane of the sheets (A, B) are generally parallel or perpendicular to each other. The sheet (A) and the polarizer disposed near the sheet (A) are in a positional relationship that the slow axis in the plane of the sheet (A) is generally parallel or perpendicular to each other. The antireflectivity, scratchability, and durability are excellent, the angle of view is wide, and uniform display when viewed even from any direction and a high contrast are achieved.
