A liquid crystal display device having an optically anisotropic body and a liquid crystal cell between a pair of polarizers disposed in a positional relationship that their absorption axes are generally perpendicular to each other. The liquid crystal display device is characterized in that when the refractive index along the slow axis in the plane of the optically anisotropic body measured by a light of a wavelength of 550 nm is denoted by nx, the refractive index in the direction perpendicular to the slow axis in the plane is denoted by ny, and the refractive index in the direction of the thickness is denoted by nz, nz> nx> ny; in that the optically anisotropic body is composed of a layer containing a material the characteristic birefringence value of which is negative; and in that the optically anisotropic body and the polarizer disposed near the optically anisotropic body are in a positional relationship that the slow axis in the plane of the optically anisotropic body is generally parallel or perpendicular to each other. The antireflectivity, scratchability, and durability are excellent, the angle of view is wide, and uniform display when viewed even from any direction and a high contrast are achieved.
