A gas generator for a protective device of motor vehicle passengers is made of concentric metal sheets. A combustion chamber (2) with a gas-generating charge (3) surrounds an igniting chamber with an ignit er and an igniting charge (1). The combustion chamber (2) is in turn surrounded by an expansion chamber (4). In order to reduce production costs and obtain a smaller, lighter and easy to recycle device, the metal sheets that form the combustion chamber (2) and the expansion chamber (4) are joined only by forming.
